Project
description

The challenge was to design a product that would meet the very different requirements of buyers and the two user groups, nursing staff and patients. Testing with the latter two groups brought us a few surprises, proving once again how essential prototyping and testing are. It was also exciting to consider the safety requirements for the medical device at a very early stage without compromising speed and flexibility.

Services

Product concept

The concept and initial trials focused on three primary aspects: the cleanability and protection of electronic components, ease of installation, and compliance with relevant medical standards.

Product design

The design was heavily influenced by where it would be used: nursing homes. Nursing staff have very little time, so the product had to be ergonomic and easy to clean. It also had to meet the visual requirements for a medical product, yet stand out from white bed sheets in terms of color.

Prototype construction

Since it is logically impossible to test medical devices on patients from the outset, the first trial prototypes were simple 3D prints designed to test specific functionalities. At the appropriate time, a small series was then produced using injection molding in order to obtain certification and conduct initial tests with patients.

Product development

When it comes to medical devices, you naturally have to adhere to strict regulations in terms of development and the product itself. Everything has to be very precisely structured and documented. Together with Dignisens, we carried out a very thorough standards research and risk assessment, while still making sure not to lose sight of the speed of development!

3D design

Considerable design effort was required for the small series and the necessary mold construction. The complex parts, which also required slides, had to be coordinated in close cooperation and iterations with prototyping.

Safety
& Well-being

DigniSens detects incontinence episodes and abnormal movements. Alarms are sent either via the call system or as a message to a smartphone, so that appropriate care can be provided quickly and precisely when it is most urgently needed.
