Product development for vertical gardening
Vertical
Garden
Client: Ponix Systems Herbert

Project
description
Herbert had to be high-quality, easy to use, and above all productive! Plants had to grow safely, even without the user having green fingers. Thanks to special lighting and the patented hydroponic irrigation system, Ponix Systems was able to achieve this. We got involved in the concept and prototyping phase and supported Ponix Systems well beyond its market entry. Dozens of individual parts and a wide variety of production methods had to be assembled, packaged, and shipped in a well-thought-out assembly process.

Services
Product concept
Simple, clean, at home is Herbert’s promise. Without any special knowledge, this vertical farm allows you to supply a small household with healthy herbs and salads. You have control over what ends up on the table and can enjoy freshness and flavor at any time. Product design
When designing the product, we made sure to use high-quality materials such as wood and aluminum, as well as durable powder coating. Our vertical garden should look good in both the kitchen and the living room and blend in well visually. That’s why there is a wide range of materials to choose from for the front.
Product design
When designing the product, we took particular care to use high-quality materials such as wood and aluminum, as well as durable powder coating. We wanted our vertical garden to look good in both the kitchen and the living room and to blend in well visually. That’s why there is a wide range of materials to choose from for the front.
Product development
What was particularly exciting for us here was the combination of different production methods with varying degrees of precision and requirements. The interdependencies between the parts and the considerations for subsequent assembly and certification were a great challenge and very instructive!
3D design
The design of the hydroponic system for injection molding was also ingenious, as large parts and the use of free-form surfaces for curved surfaces are far from commonplace.
Prototype construction
A great deal of joint prototyping and testing went into the implementation. For the “flower pots” alone, there were several prototypes, some vacuum-cast and some CNC-milled. The sheet metal design was also calculated several times and produced in different designs—not least to reduce costs at an early stage.

Project management
We continue to support Ponix Systems even after its market entry. Our tasks here included minor product optimizations and, above all, setting up a simple ordering concept. All data flows together here, enabling the right decisions to be made at the right time.
